Kiosk is the terms that is typically used to refer to any self-service or computing terminal in a free-standing environment. Whether retail or informational in nature, they are essentially fully-contained systems for accessing information and/or completing retail transactions. They may take a number of forms, but typically consist of touchscreen displays which allow the user to interact with the system in an intuitive and non-intrusive way.
The trend
Quickly becoming the main choice for Point of Sale and other situations in which companies would like to personally touch their customers, kiosks solutions have come of age. A kiosk solution can engage your customers, share information and automate sales - even bring e-commerce solutions right to visitors within a specific physical location.
Ideally, kiosks should be so exceedingly intuitive so that users can figure out how to use it on their own. However, this goal requires that the creator of the system has the knowledge and familiarity to create a user experience that is designed to elicit one-on-one interaction with your target demographic, and do it in such a way as to have the least amount of manual intervention into the process. The bottom line is that even if it is in a prime location, kiosk solutions must be easy to use, or they may not be used at all.
With experience in creating kiosk applications for our clients, Media Dog Productions utilizes the technology that is best suited to the goals of your campaign. Whether you wish for your solution to utilize an HTML or browser based approach or an internet enabled stand alone Flash application, Media Dog has had experience with implementing technologies that encompass best practice and can assist you in reaching your demographic directly and effectively. In addition, with our experience in web applications and technology, we will build the central application that will help you to manage, monitor and control all of your kiosks and utilize the information that they are collecting in order to assist you with your future endeavors.

Alberta Cancer Board - Psychosocial Screening Kiosk
The Challenge:
In the past, the Alberta Cancer Board's Psychosocial Resource department utilized an existing screening application to determine the distress levels of cancer patients for both statistical gathering and referral of patients into associated programs. They also utilized the statistics that were gathered for other separate initiatives within the clinic. This original application was designed to run on tablet PCs, and although the system was a success, ACB encountered usability issues within their target demographic. In addition, it was developed using older techniques and functionality, and required a complete rebuild in order to not only run in a kiosk, but also support new approaches and advances in technology.
Media Dog's challenge was to re-develop and extend the screening system utilizing new technologies, and house its user interface within a touch-screen kiosk-based environment.
The Solution:
This new system is a rebuild and improvement of an old piece of software that has already been created for Tom Baker Cancer Clinic (TBCC). This old system operated via tablet PC and utilized a stylus as an input device and as a result, it was very hard for their patients to use.
Out of many vendors, Media Dog was chosen as the team to redevelop this system in a touch-screen kiosk environment. We chose to develop the new system utilizing a combination of technologies in order to make it more usable, efficient, distributed and functional. Because the main requirement was to create the screening to operate within a kiosk, Flash was chosen for its flexibility and ease of integration with other systems and server technologies.
Mid way through creation of the kiosk component, it was decided that it would make sense to integrate this new system deeply into the clinic's day-to-day business processes in order to allow them to use the data that they were gathering in order to manage their patients better. With this in mind, Media Dog outlined and implemented a new administrative arm for the software which allowed for much fuller functionality and allows them to utilize, on a daily basis, the data that the system is collecting.
The Results:
The result is a newly created system built to run in a kiosk format which not only enables more TBCC patients the ability to fill out and complete the screening questionnaire, but also allows TBCC staff the ability to care for them in a more personal and focused manner. From their original screening application which simply collected and displayed data, they now can:
- Determine the distress levels of cancer patients in order to assess them for referral to different resources for care
- Perform 3, 6 and 12 month follow up screenings in order to determine how much impact their resources are having in a patient's life
- Enter data from multiple sources: phone, paper, etc.
- Export data to SPSS
- Pull an extensive range of reports
- Manage patient resources and referrals
